Houston is a lovely city, as cities go. Traffic wasn't too awful, and they have plenty of parks and museums to visit. While I was visiting with a friend (the reason I went in the first place), we popped by Hermann Park, specifically the Garden Center. It being the height of Summer (and, in case I haven't mentioned before h-o-t, hot!), many of the flowers were feeling the heat, especially the roses, but the whole was quite lovely. Of course, I took many photographs, but I won't post them all at once. I thought I would focus on the first thing I saw when we walked through the gate - the pagoda.
In the center of a large green space, it provides welcome shade and a place to sit and read, chat, or meditate. The roof curves gracefully, sweeping upward at the corners, and it's full of detailed work.
I think the fellow in front is riding a chicken...if I knew more about Chinese culture, history, and mythology, I'm sure that would make sense to me. As it stands, I thought it was intriguing.
The inside was painted with bright colors and patterns, scroll work, carvings...someone put a lot of time and effort into this pavilion.
East meets West...
The front entry had this panel above it. Anyone read Chinese?
Later this week, more photos from the Garden Center, and photos and stories from Galveston, plus maybe a contest...which reminds me...hey, Mel? I am still planning to mail you that prize...someday...
Looks a lot like traditional Korean architecture. Pretty!
ReplyDeleteQuite beautiful, Lady.
ReplyDeleteNie picture, my friend! You do a mean camera, for sure!
ReplyDeleteRachel, it was part of a memorial of sorts, honoring the Chinese workers who helped build the railroad that spanned the ever-growing United States, way back when.
ReplyDeleteCygnus...thank you, Sir...I thought the whole day was quite lovely...
Mister Hermit, sir, it's a little ol' Kodak Easy Share, and I adore it!
